As Asinhas

Gareth writes "As Asinhas Restaurant

The name As Asinhas means “Little Wings” & comes from the football club benfica’s mascot / symbol. The benfica football club mascot is an eagle hence the name asinhas, think of it as a pet name for the football club mascot of benfica. The restaurant was been there for almost 10 years so I expect some of you may have allready visited this fine restaurant, if not then continue to read !

The service was great, we were served by the owner “Antonio Fernandes” whom was very polite & helpfull also his English was execellent. I ordered the pepper fillet steak & Guida ordered the swordfish, my steak was a little on the small side (Antonio informed me the weight was 250 grams so it was not so small) the pepper sauce was indeed amazing & by far the best pepper sauce I’ve tried in Portugal it came with a good helping of rice & chips, the steak itself was soft delicate & extremely tasty, in fact to be honest it was one of the better steaks I’ve eaten in Lagos. Guidas swordfish was a decent size, soft delicate & without bones, it was served with boiled potatoes, veg & salad Guida loves fish & said it was an excellent meal.

Other things I noticed during our visit was the height of the gents toilet, when using the gents “look up” the ceiling has got to be a good 3-4 metres high & the bathroom itself was very clean & tidy, also from the restaurant dining area you can see into the kitchen & watching the cooks prepare your meal helps to pass the waiting time. We ate after the holiday season had finished & Restaurante As Asinhas was busy the whole time we were there with both locals & tourists, this tells me the restaurant is very popular so it maybe a good idea to book your table during the peak summer months. For the larger drinkers reading this :) there canecas are the real thing  “50c” and not “40c” like most other places & they have super bock on draft.

Antonio noticed I was writing notes on my telephone & inquired why, I explained I wanted to post a recommendation to our website & he  at this point  insisted I tried the mustard steak (I was undecided between the mustard & pepper steak at the beginning of the night) .. Wow what can I say he did recommend the mustard rather than the pepper steak & he was right the mustard sauce steak was exceptional & despite my indicial hesitance the mustard sauce steak did exceed the pepper sauce steak & is now what I would recommend to anybody visiting this restaurant?

The meal cost us a €27 we had 2 courses, veg soup (which was also very nice) followed by steak & swordfish, all in all Asinhas proves you can enjoy a fantastic meal for 2 for under €30

As Asinhas is located on the same road as the main camp site in Lagos, from the small round about head up the road towards the camp site for 10 meters & you will see the restaurant on your right hand side, its about a 10/12 minute walk from lagos town center just outside the city walls, (just head for the campsite).
