Welcome to our Lagos website

Lagos in Portugal is an absolute jewel in the Algarve crown. It has chosen to develop its tourism trade with taste, class & standards. It offers a balance between charm and history, Lagos has the Portuguese culture with a blend of creature comforts and facilities to please the desires of the most discerning tourist, property hunter or sun seeker. The warmth & friendliness of Lagos and the people make it difficult to resist falling in love with this seaside holiday town. I can only say that Lagos has a special “something” that you feel when you spend time here, and that’s why this website was started "it´s my way of showing my appreciation" for all the help, fun & love I have experienced here in Lagos in Portugal.

LagosPortugal.info was started in January 2008 for the purpose of creating a lagos based community offering news, reviews and reports on our local restaurants, bars, appartment rental and lagos life in general. It’s our goal to make this website useful for expats, tourists & locals alike. There are already many sites covering this area but none are community based & most charge fees, this site is 100% free & always will be, in my experience it’s the users that make great web sites & so to this end I´ve made the website as interactive as possible. Unfortunately this website is something I do in my spare time so expect the site to grow. I have many new useful features planned so check back often to see the latest developments.

Bar Paris in Lagos is good news for those on a budget.

Anonymous writes "

On the Estrada da Meia Praia, near to the Marina Sao Roque Hotel, stands the Cafe/Bar Paris. This establishment has existed for many years but has mostly appeared to be closed whenever we have passed, but things have changed drastically....... The owner of the bar has put his son, Tony, in charge and the place has been transformed !!

Tony offers free internet and wireless connection to clients and has recently installed a printer for use at a minimal charge. There is a new pool table in the bar and furnishings are new,  modern and spotless as are the rest of the premises. Prices are extremely competetive with a caneca of Superbock selling for a mere €1:70 and bottles of Crystal costing only €1. There's a wide range of spirits and Port wines at prices well below what most bars are charging. Food is high quality and excellently prepared and, at €4:50, the full English breakfast is super value, consisting of bacon, sausage, mushrooms, baked beans together with hot buttered toast.

For those visiting Lagos on a budget, as well as those of us who appreciate good quality and value for money, Paris bar is a welcome addition to the drinking and eating delights of our favourite Algarve town. The only piece of bad news is that the bar does not open on Sundays.

Restaurant Cozinha Petisco - tried and tested 2009

Anonymous writes "We have been to Cozinha Petisco several times - excellent value, but you need to book or be there early - as there isn't much in the way of seating!   Prawns Homestyle to die for, and Almond Roll one of the best we've tasted.  Steak was super as well - all reasonably priced and excellent service.  Roll on September when we are back there!"

Has Portugal solved the electric car problem?

Gareth writes "LAGOS, Portugal -  It's a hot summer weekend and the parking lots around Lagos marina are filling quickly with the BMWs, Range Rovers and Porsche SUVs of the Portuguese yachting set. The scene is repeated across the sun-splashed Algarve coast, but a new government plan could make the gas-guzzling race to the south coast a thing of the past.

Prime Minister Jose Socrates is seeking to make Portugal a European trendsetter in green transport. In June, he launched groundbreaking plans for a nationwide network of recharging stations that would allow battery driven electric automobiles to cruise the highways. By 2011, Socrates' Socialist administration wants 1,300 stations around the country where environment-friendly motorists can plug-in their electric cars as part of a drive to "liberate Portugal from its dependency on foreign oil. The first station in the Mobi-E network opened in Lisbon on July 23. A hundred are due to be up and running by the end of this year and 320 should be in place in 2010. In the meantime Renault-Nissan says that Portugal will be one of the first markets for the launch of its electric vehicles in 2011.

The charging network is part of a wider Portuguese plan to switch to green energy that involves investments in wind-turbines, solar panels and wave farms. The plan takes advantage of the country's location on Europe's sunny, but breezy, southwest tip.

Socrates' motives are not purely ecological. Portugal has no domestic coal, natural gas or oil and has been forced to import most of its energy. By investing in renewables, Western Europe's poorest nation is seeking to find cheaper energy alternatives for itself and to create a niche as an exporter of green technology. Portugal already produces over one-third of its electricity from renewable sources, double the average of the 27 European Union nations. Socrates says the proportion will rise to 45 percent by 2010. Near the southern town of Moura, Portugal has built one of the world's biggest photovoltaic power stations. The world's first commercial wave farm began producing electricity from the coast of northern Portugal last year. Hill tops and cliffs around the nation are covered by giant wind turbines, many operated by the power company EDP, Portugal's lead electricity supplier that has emerged as a world leader in wind technology. "Portugal is a global leader in renewable energy. The next step is to make Portugal a pioneer in zero emission mobility," Socrates said announcing the decision to create a web of recharging sites in gas stations, shopping malls, hotels, airports and parking lots. Socrates hopes the state investment will encourage vehicle manufacturers to locate new production facilities in his country, which has been hit hard by the global recession.

On July 20, Renault-Nissan announced it will build a new 250 million euro ($355 million) plant in Portugal to produce 60,000 lithium-ion batteries a year for electric cars. The Franco-Japanese alliance has also agreed to make Portugal one of a number of pilot markets for the roll out of electric cars over the next few years, along with Denmark and Israel. The first vehicles should be on the Portuguese market within the next two years. Although the early Renault-Nissan models will be made in France and Japan, Portugal is hoping the battery plant and recharging network will be stepping stones to a much greater investment in car manufacturing in Portugal."

As Asinhas

Gareth writes "As Asinhas Restaurant

The name As Asinhas means “Little Wings” & comes from the football club benfica’s mascot / symbol. The benfica football club mascot is an eagle hence the name asinhas, think of it as a pet name for the football club mascot of benfica. The restaurant was been there for almost 10 years so I expect some of you may have allready visited this fine restaurant, if not then continue to read !

The service was great, we were served by the owner “Antonio Fernandes” whom was very polite & helpfull also his English was execellent. I ordered the pepper fillet steak & Guida ordered the swordfish, my steak was a little on the small side (Antonio informed me the weight was 250 grams so it was not so small) the pepper sauce was indeed amazing & by far the best pepper sauce I’ve tried in Portugal it came with a good helping of rice & chips, the steak itself was soft delicate & extremely tasty, in fact to be honest it was one of the better steaks I’ve eaten in Lagos. Guidas swordfish was a decent size, soft delicate & without bones, it was served with boiled potatoes, veg & salad Guida loves fish & said it was an excellent meal.
